"This one is a very strange song, and I think we may even shock people a bit with this album — a reaction like, 'Wow! What was all that about? That's a really weird one? I hope so. 'All Hands on Deck' was one of the last songs that Steve and Jon were working on, and we added things right up to the last minute. We just got our heads down and wanted to see what happened. I don't go in with preconceptions. We just experimented." The song started out with lyrics, and when the band developed it, Steve almost decided not to use them. "'All Hands on Deck' has had a very dense, rather intricate history, and it has changed a lot in a very short period of time," Steve explains. "It was all kind of interconnected with other songs. It was a mash-up with lots of other musical ideas and was part of them. Eventually, I said, Whoa! This has gotten so ridiculous!' It had originally been connected to 'Emotional Intelligence'.
