A man competes. Dante is a desperate man who owes a debt to a dangerous man. To pay off this debt, he agrees to enter an endurance competition in which he must keep his hand touching a car to win a cash prize. During the contest, an increasingly sleep-deprived Dante manages to outlast most of his competition, thanks to his wiles, powers of persuasion and a few lies. But as it wears on, an equally desperate competitor refuses to step aside as the stakes for Dante become alarmingly urgent, pushing him to a breaking point. Directed by Daniel Rands and written by Sam Barrow, this gritty short drama-thriller is a pressurized, intense study of economic desperation, endurance and exploitation. Dante is a man who sits at this intersection, pinned down like a bug by the crime boss he's run afoul of. To squirm his way out of a debt, he participates in an endurance contest that will not only test his will and resilience but decide his survival beyond the car lot where it takes place. The film's style is immediately striking, blending muted, drained naturalism with sharp, sometimes skewed framings and compositions, capturing the setting's depressed social and economic milieu and the off-kilter personalities within it. It's the sort of place where small-time crime runs amok, overseen by a boss who coerces Dante to participate in the contest. The deft, fast-paced storytelling quickly winnows upon Dante as the contest gets underway, first capturing the psychological battle of the game itself as Dante jockeys for the win. His opponents are compactly but vividly characterized, a pantheon of different shades of social marginality and economic deprivation, driven by poverty and lack of opportunity or safety net. Dante, as played by actor Tai Hilferink with compelling intensity, is their equal in desperation -- and increasingly unafraid of exerting his own growing powers of manipulation and intimidation. But the crime boss knuckles down on Dante, underscoring how he needs to win to pay his debt or face dire consequences. The film enters a more frantic, pressurized register, ratcheting up the stakes and tension and transforming into a thriller nonpareil as it all bears down on Dante. It powers the narrative to a high pitch of a conclusion, with an ending that's both powerful, cathartic and open. Propulsive, breathtaking and nerve-wracking, FOUR DOOR DANTE leaves us with the feeling of a primal scream -- the gap between the frayed end of a rope and the abyss waiting below. FOUR DOOR DANTE.
