A woman teaches. Alyssa is a professor and writer whose latest work has just been rejected. She's heartbroken, and she's full of doubt and insecurity. When she faces her new students at the first session of her latest creative writing class, she perhaps feels like an imposter. It's a motley group of students, full of different personalities writing different things, all for their own reasons. But as Alyssa listens to each student bare their souls, she discovers a new reason to keep going. Directed by Nick Pinelli, written by Amanda Pfeiffer and produced by Jenerro Wade, this bighearted, empathetic short comedy is not just a wry, affectionately funny snapshot of a quirky creative writing class full of outsized personalities, big ideas and perhaps more enthusiasm than craft or technique. It also charts how these yearning souls -- including the instructor who leads them -- become something more than a class, as they share their stories, hopes, dreams and doubts. The film opens on what appears to be a romantic date -- but instead of getting a proposal, Alyssa gets a rejection from an editor type on her latest manuscript. It's on her mind as she begins the first session of the writing class she teaches. It's standard Creative Writing 101 workshop format, but the narrative has a lot of fun with it -- the writing and performances are sharp and economical, presenting each student with a distinctive voice and personality. Their stories are brought to life by the witty storytelling, which spans voices and genres: taut Western, heartfelt drama, horror, political drama about...cats. It all makes for an overall lively storytelling experience, like many mini-films in one, and each visually distinctive with touches of humor. But the heart of the story is Alyssa's slow transformation from despondent creative to inspired guide. As she listens to each story and gently shepherds her class, she is not only inspired and challenged by her students, but rediscovers why stories matter to her. Funny, warm and generous of spirit, WRITE ON is essentially about communities and how they feed us in essential, sometimes soul-expanding ways. It reminds us that we all have a story to tell, and no two stories are the same -- or told for the same reason. Yet in our sharing and listening to these stories, we become more fully human.
