Two neighbors connect. Sybil lives alone in an apartment, and though her housing complex is full of people like herself, she has never met her neighbors. She's isolated and somewhat lonely. But when a hole is cut between her apartment and her upstairs neighbor's place to address a leak, she can't resist peeking through it. She discovers the home of her neighbor, Hugo, and she becomes fascinated by his world and life. Soon she's climbing through the hole to explore -- an act that leads to some broken bones and an unlikely friendship. Directed by Courtney Karwal and written by Rachel Forman, this quirky, thoughtful short dramedy explores the isolation and emotional distance of modern life, through one woman's unconventional attempt to break out of her lonely bubble of existence. Sybil lives alone, and though she has hobbies and a lovely place of her own, her world is profoundly quiet. Like many in an urban milieu, she's surrounded by others, but the mores and conventions of life these days mean she never really connects with anyone. When she discovers the hole between her and her neighbor's flats, she can't resist its siren call to take a look, uncovering an unignorable yearning to reach out in the process. The storytelling and visuals bring a quiet luminosity to its depiction of modern life -- Sybil's world is clean, lived in and softly colorful, and the direction imbues the small rituals of her life with affection. But it's also a life that feels quiet at times, due to its isolation. But the hole in her bathroom ceiling punctures the barrier between her and Hugo just enough for her to enter his world. She's drawn in by him, but her curiosity causes her to fall and break her arm. That broken arm leads to a series of interactions that are touchingly awkward. As it turns out, Sybil has her own internal obstacles to breaking out of her bubble, like her shyness and fear of looking silly. As Sybil, actor Nichole Sakura could play these contradictions for farce, but instead, she grounds them in Sybil's vulnerability. She still longs to connect, but she goes about it in a roundabout way, and her efforts make for some gentle comedy of errors and a collision with an equally awkward Hugo, played by actor David Brown with an equally gentle touch. But just when she's given up, her efforts bear fruit in a delightfully charming way, bringing THE HOLE to a sweetly hopeful close and revealing the film's generosity of spirit and acceptance. Sybil never had to make any grand gestures. Instead, connection came with small, honest and imperfect moments and efforts. Even in a world where the barriers between people seem to be growing wider, these tiny but powerful gestures plant the seeds for human connection to take root and even thrive. THE HOLE.
