A date goes awry. Omar is a teenage boy who's on top of the world. At long last, he's making out with a real live girl at a party, and he's thrilled, even if things get a little awkward here and there. But when his date's unstable ex is discharged from the Marines and wants to talk, Omar must decide if he will slink away from fear or stand up for her, winning her over once and for all. Directed by Ammad Shaikh and written by Jot Singh, this playful and entertaining short comedy chronicles one teen's coming of age as he hits one milestone of life, only to come up against complications. We meet Omar as he's kissing Sumi in a car, and he's at a high point, having finally had his first kiss. But the highlight soon turns into an unpredictable situation when Sumi's strong, mentally unbalanced ex Dewey enters the scene, and Omar must discover his courage and resilience as he tries to prove himself boyfriend material. The film's fast-moving, energetic style is lively and engaging, informed by the aesthetics of social media and classic early 2000s teen films and overlaid over a sturdy backbone of storytelling and an often sardonic voiceover by a Morgan Freeman soundalike. Cleverly written and nimbly directed, the plot moves from one chaotic note to the next as Omar comes up against the alpha male that is Dewey, which brings up his insecurities. In the center of it all, actor Rumman Ariff plays Omar as sweetly hapless, as if he can't quite believe his good luck at landing a date with his dream girl. To keep her, he must come into his confidence and assert his place by her side. But to the film's credit, the pieces don't quite fall into place in the way Omar expects, as he comes up against a very grown-up realization: all the tropes of what it means to be a man and win the girl don't hold with the complexities of life, which rarely follow the script. Omar learns a hard lesson about disappointment, dating and romance, discovering that life is messy and unpredictable, in part because people are complex themselves. Maybe Omar will discover a way to be a hero in his own story. But it's likely wiser for him to realize that growing into adulthood is a series of learning experiences. The business of being human is figured out, one lesson at a time... but maybe we should listen to our inner Morgan Freeman voiceover sometimes. DATING.
