Two sisters reunite. Isabel and Mariana are two estranged sisters who have returned to their childhood home in rural Texas. Their father is sick, and they're there to ostensibly care for him, but what they really want is to reclaim what was stolen from them during their violent, disappointing childhood. Their father is as cruel, narcissistic and vindictive as ever, and when he proves unrepentant, they plot to end his life. But their fury also summons a "duende," a sinister, elf-like creature that appears when someone in a family desires the death of another member. The duende encourages their dark scheme, and the sisters must confront their rage at their parent and whether or not they can ever be truly free of their past. Directed and written by Justin Floyd, this mercurial, darkly comic short drama is a tautly directed, vividly rendered tall tale of familial legacy, violence, retribution and the heartache at the core of a troubled childhood. It balances stylish visuals, emotional brutality, wickedly dark humor and a streak of the fantastical, charting two temperamentally different sisters who come back together to grapple with their troubling and toxic patriarch. Isabel and Mariana find themselves back at their father's home after making lives for themselves after leaving the household. Their father lies weak and bedridden, but as the sisters discover, he's still capable of considerable malice and emotional cruelty; his dialogue bristles with sadism, relishing the pain he inflicts on the young women and enjoying his own remorselessness. As the sisters, actors Adriana Santos and Sophia Del Rio may be different in temperament -- Mariana is fiery; Isabel is more patient and seemingly compassionate -- but they are both equally damaged by their father's maliciousness. In a fit of anger, Isabel retreats to a bathroom on the premises, only to discover that the toilet houses a strange, elf-like creature who emerges. It's a fantastical, surreal moment, both frighteningly uncanny and comical. (The maxi pad attached to the creature is a funny touch.) It also quickens the intensity of the film, as the "elf of death" has the magical ability to conjure any weapon or tool of destruction the sisters desire after they resolve to put their father out of his misery. His efforts can be outlandish, and the process of figuring out the method is laced with dark humor. But they also propel the sisters to one final, intense confrontation with their father, one that unveils their desire for accountability and contrition from their father before he dies -- and some dark family secrets. It brings SAY YOU'RE SORRY to an unsettling, viscerally memorable conclusion, one that caps off a distinctive storytelling experience laced with sardonic relish, visual panache and unforgettable catharsis.
