A cat searches the galaxy. Pucha is a "catstronaut" traveling the galaxy in search of the meaning of life. On one promising planet, she encounters Blip, a space pup who is eager to come along on the journey. Blip is so excited to meet someone that her enthusiasm causes mishaps that send Pucha's journey off course. Along the way, the pair encounters more creatures and ideas, leading Pucha to realize that there is no simple answer to her questions. Directed and animated by Neeraja Raj and written by Vanessa Rose and Neeraja Raj, this vivid, whimsical animated short blends fanciful visuals, stop-motion animation and musical numbers in a funhouse of a narrative that takes us to all corners of a rollickingly imaginative universe. Pucha and Blip are adorably realized characters, and their misadventures make for a surprisingly existential exploration that celebrates the varied tapestry of life and the unexpected connections and insights we make while searching for meaning and fulfillment. Much of the initial charm comes from the fresh, tactile stop-motion animation, which brings to life a colorful, playful world. From the interiors of the spaceship to the planetary surfaces that Pucha lands upon, Raj has built a world full of colors and textures that invite our imaginations to frolic and play. The visual creativity on display is inventive and immediately engaging, as are the songs that Pucha launches into when we first meet her. But it's when Pucha first meets Blip that the story takes off. The pairing is a thorny one at first, with the lonely Blip attaching herself to Pucha, much to the cat's annoyance and reluctance. Their odd-couple dynamic makes for both conflict and humor, and the character work is expressive, with Pucha's eyes especially vivid in their countenance. They explore different cultures and worlds, allowing the film to thread moments of wry humor and sardonic whimsy. (The cute dancing marshmallows are a nice touch.) But when Pucha realizes that she hasn't found the meaning she's been looking for, she must choose to move on or leave Blip behind. We don't know if Pucha ever finds the meaning of life, but what she does find is just as valuable: friendship, understanding and connection. It brings MEOW OR NEVER to a genuinely sweet conclusion. The meaning of life may be just what we make of it, and we might always be in search of it as our lived experience shifts and changes. But having a friend who really gets you -- and someone to have fun with -- makes the search so much more enjoyable. Which may be the point, actually. MEOW OR NEVER.
