A woman cooks.
Quinn is a former chef who has been paralyzed and can no longer work. As part of an experimental treatment with a company called NeuroShift, she can enter a virtual world where she can do what she loves again while her body is being treated.
In this virtual world, she is accompanied by company minder Anders, who monitors her virtual self for signs of progress or distress and begins to develop a friendship with his charge. As Quinn gets used to her virtual self and shows a greater reluctance to leave, she is torn between the illusion of escape and the painful beauty of real life.
Directed and written by Hannah Bales, this contemplative short sci-fi drama explores the connection between pain, escapism and healing, as one woman in the middle of a medical treatment finds herself balancing the lure of a beautiful but limited virtual world and the painful realities of her lived experience. Quinn is a paraplegic, but she has hopes of being cured through an ambitious but controlling doctor's treatment. That treatment allows her to escape from reality, but that escape can also be a trap that will imprison or damage her in that reality eventually.
The storytelling balances both minimalism and lushness, giving us few details at first about the character and situation. They unfold organically as Quinn and Anders develop a friendship in this virtual world, which is a cabin on top of a beautifully snowy mountain. This world is rendered in a luxurious, aspirational gleam, but it has limitations -- Quinn cannot stay long, as much as she wants to. And Anders is warned not to get too close emotionally to the patient he's minding and observing.
The conflict grows between Quinn, the treatment and her desire and ability to fit into its parameters, set by the rigid doctor and scientist who pioneered it. It doesn't elaborate on the mechanisms of the experiment, but instead focuses on how it affects Quinn emotionally. Actor Sophie Moussel plays Quinn as a reserved, intelligent woman with an innate elegance, but under her poise is someone who can't quite face the difficult realities of her situation. Anders, played by actor Jaymes Butler, has a watchful quality that suits the role of a company minder. But as he develops a personal friendship with Quinn, his loyalties are tested. But through his friendship, he helps Quinn extract herself from the hopes of a possibly dangerous treatment and accept the reality of her new body and circumstances.
In look and feel, TERRE ADELIE is much like the language of its title and setting: refined, sophisticated and thoughtful, with a deceptive calm and composure. But at its heart, it traverses more raw emotional terrain, examining the tug between avoidance and acceptance when it comes to life's challenges. Through friendship and the self-examination it facilitates, Quinn finds the support and affirmation to face and even find her passion again, rediscovering the strength to move forward.
