Finally we are ready to test the new turbine, which was custom designed by a professional engineer. First I need to mount the turbine in the generator setup. I fabricate a drive hex out of aluminum. Then I discover that the shaft is too bent so I straighten it on the lathe. That's a side project that is pretty interesting and a valuable skill to learn. Once I have the shaft straightened to within .003", I balance the shaft and finally assemble it. I explain the engineering behind the turbine and we are ready for testing. In the first test I discover how AWESOME the clear pipe is. Amazing stuff, especially seeing the turbine produce laminar flow when operating at the right RPM. I am having some trouble getting all the air to flush out of the pipe, and I try to suck it out with a shop vac. That doesn't entirely work, but I have a plan. Parts are currently on the way. I can still do some testing and I put the dyno to work. Peak power: 1150 watts! That's quite an improvement from my previous 430 watts! More testing to come.
