NF-KB is an ancient transcription factor that controls inflammation and is activated by a buildup of NADH and Acetyl-CoA. It used to be thought it was activated by oxidative stress. Using an antioxidant that does not oxidize NADH causes an increased NADH/NAD+ ratio and reductive stress, leading to inflammation.
