Currently Playing: I Tested Japan's Last-Ditch WWII Weapon: The Bamboo Spear

#WWII #MartialArts #History How do you prepare a nation of farmers, factory workers and schoolchildren to fight one of the most powerful militaries on Earth? In 1943, Imperial Japan had a terrifyingly simple answer: the bamboo spear. As an Allied invasion loomed, ordinary people were handed manuals and trained to fight with sharpened bamboo as part of Japan's desperate homeland defense preparations. In this video, I follow a WWII Japanese bamboo-spear training manual from beginning to end — building the weapon, learning the prescribed techniques, constructing the training target and putting the system to the test. The training wasn't simply about learning how to use a weapon. It placed enormous emphasis on spirit, courage and relentless forward movement, ultimately progressing from basic thrusts to repeated attacks and a final charging exercise. Along the way, I explore who this training was intended for, how it fitted into Japan's wider civilian mobilization, and what this strange manual reveals about Japan's preparations for an Allied invasion. The question is simple: Could a system this basic actually prepare ordinary people to fight a modern invading army? 📘 Check out the full book for the complete section on spear defense and much more: Defense of the Japanese Homeland: Japanese Army Manuals 1943–1945 by Eric Shahan Kindle Edition: https://link.amazon/B0eZYkH47 Paperback: https://link.amazon/B0g9gIjKV Eric Shahan is also the translator of the English-language manual used in this video. ⏱️ Chapters 00:02 – Japan's Desperate Last Line of Defence 01:02 – Building the Bamboo Spear 02:15 – Who Was This Training For? 04:10 – The Mindset: Spirit, Spear and Body 05:06 – Building the Training Target 06:40 – Putting the Bamboo Spear to the Test 07:15 – The Final Charge 📚 Books & Resources (Affiliate Links) 📘 My Books Legendary Masters of the Martial Arts eBook: https://amzn.to/47DBD4g Hardback: https://amzn.to/47SzcJU Paperback: https://amzn.to/47DBIF6 The Martial Arts of Vietnam: An Overview of History and Styles eBook: https://amzn.to/41bESMq Paperback: https://amzn.to/48jTgWz Top 10 Techniques Every Fighter Should Know Kicks eBook: https://amzn.to/4cdrOMM Paperback: https://amzn.to/3Qc5732 Elbows and Knees eBook: https://amzn.to/4mzYOlT Paperback: https://amzn.to/4taBuO2 🔔 SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE For more deep dives into martial arts history, WWII combat systems, military training, historical weapons and real-world effectiveness, subscribe to the channel.
