Currently Playing: Did China's Armies ABANDON Kung Fu?

#chinesemartialarts #kungfu #selfdefense Did the Chinese military really abandon Kung Fu? In this video, I investigate the history of Kung Fu in the Chinese military, from Qi Jiguang, the Shaolin Temple and the Ming Dynasty through the Republican era, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), military boxing, Sanda, and the modern use of MMA fighters to train Chinese troops. The answer is more complicated than simply saying that China stopped training Kung Fu. Traditional martial arts gradually lost their role as complete military systems, but many of their techniques were adapted into new forms of military close-combat training. I look at why the Chinese military moved away from traditional martial arts, how Sanda developed from Chinese martial arts and became a competitive combat sport, why the PLA eventually pushed back against spectacular Kung Fu and hard-Qigong demonstrations, and what the use of professional MMA fighters to train Chinese troops tells us about the modern approach to hand-to-hand combat. Was abandoning traditional Kung Fu sensible military modernisation — or did the Chinese military lose something valuable?
