Did Hitler already intend to turn against Stalin in 1939, just weeks after Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union invaded and divided Poland? The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact of August 1939 allowed Adolf Hitler to avoid an immediate two-front war, while Germany and the USSR divided Eastern Europe into spheres of influence. But Hitler never abandoned his ambitions for conquest in the East. In October 1939, Hitler was already discussing a future confrontation with the Soviet Union. On November 23, he told his military commanders that Germany could only oppose Russia once it was free to act in the West. This was not yet a concrete plan for Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941. For the time being, Hitler and Stalin continued their political and economic cooperation. But their partnership was never intended to last forever. Meanwhile, Stalin’s regime had already carried out mass repression against ethnic Poles during the Great Terror. Why were Poles specifically targeted by the Soviet secret police?
