Why did Joseph Stalin sign a pact with Adolf Hitler instead of forming an alliance with Britain and France? In 1939, the Soviet Union negotiated with Britain and France over a possible military alliance against Nazi Germany. But distrust, disagreements over the Baltic states, and Poland’s refusal to allow Soviet troops across its territory helped bring those negotiations to a deadlock. Hitler offered Stalin something very different. The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact publicly promised non-aggression, but its secret protocol divided much of Eastern Europe into German and Soviet spheres of influence, including plans for the partition of Poland. Stalin hoped the deal could expand Soviet territory, increase strategic depth, and keep the USSR out of a wider European war while Germany and the Western powers exhausted each other.
