Join me as I dive into the controversial world of Emilia Pérez, the Spanish-language musical crime drama that’s been making waves—and not always for the right reasons. Directed by Jacques Audiard, this Netflix original follows a cartel leader’s wild journey to fake their death and transition, all set to a divisive soundtrack. I watched it (so you don’t have to) and I’m breaking down the highs, lows, and everything in between— from the performances of Zoe Saldaña, Karla Sofía Gascón, and Selena Gomez to the infamous ‘Vaginoplasty’ song. Is it Oscar-worthy or a total misfire? Spoiler alert: I’ve got opinions. Stick around for a no-holds-barred review of this polarizing 2024 release.
