A short-form series on historical and contemporary color wheels, and why they were built. Each episode discusses what problem a color wheel (or wheels) tried to solve, who made it, and what it gets right or wrong. We end up covering a lot of color theory ground in the process! New episodes every Wednesday.

Rudolph Schaeffer (1886–1988) founded the School of Rhythmo-Chromatic Design in San Francisco, and taught color theory for over seven decades. His tempera color wheel design shows up online as public domain wall art. People like it as decor, but what, if anything, is it trying to illustrate? In this video, I look at what the wheel actually shows, where Schaeffer's color theory ideas came from (Ralph Johonnot, Arthur Wesley Dow, and J.A.H. Hatt), and finally, why a teacher this influential vanished from the color theory canon.
