Color Wheel Wednesday

A short-form series on historical and contemporary color wheels, and why they were built. Each episode discusses what problem a color wheel (or wheels) tried to solve, who made it, and what it gets right or wrong. We end up covering a lot of color theory ground in the process! New episodes every Wednesday.

LEGO fans have built color wheels and charts made of bricks. But why is there no official LEGO color chart? I asked Dr. Christoph Bartneck: former LEGO employee, and author of the Unofficial LEGO Color Guide. Then, using L*a*b* data from his book, I built a three-dimensional LEGO colorspace... really just to find out what one would even look like. Along the way, I explain what L*a*b* actually means and why it's still a standard in many industries fifty years on. I also discuss with Dr. Bartneck why a color guide is valuable to LEGO fans, as well as his plans for a LEGO color-identifying app. Special thanks to Dr. Bartneck for being generous with his time and for advising me as I hunted for bricks of every color.
