A short-form series on the color wheels you've never heard of, and why they were built. Each episode covers one wheel: what problem it was solving, who made it, and what it gets right or wrong. New episodes every Wednesday.

Most quilters learn color from a wheel built for painters, by painters. This week on Color Wheel Wednesday, we're going in depth on the three main schools of color theory for fiber artists: 1) the Itten school, 2) the Ives school, and finally, 3) a perception-based approach. This week I'm also pleased to feature fiber artist and educator Erika Mulvenna, whose 2022 Visual Contrast Color Wheel applies cone-opponency theory to quilt design. She shares her color theory journey as an art quilter, and I also look at the history of quilter-specific color tools, from Leona Rocha Wilson's 1977 Fashionetics wheel to Joen Wolfrom's Essential Color Wheel Companion. In the end, I try to settle which model actually reflects how quilters use color. This is Episode 14 of Color Wheel Wednesday.
