A short-form series on historical and contemporary color wheels, and why they were built. Each episode discusses what problem a color wheel (or wheels) tried to solve, who made it, and what it gets right or wrong. We end up covering a lot of color theory ground in the process! New episodes every Wednesday.

Most color wheels promise to solve one or more of the following problems: predicting mixtures, choosing harmonious colors, and visualizing how colors relate in space. Most fail. So which one actually earns a place in my studio? In the ninth installment of Color Wheel Wednesday, I put the well-known Color Wheel Company wheel to the test... and then show you the chart I actually reach for: Bruce MacEvoy's Wheel from https://handprint.com, a rigorous map of ~80 watercolor pigments plotted using CIECAM02, one of the best perceptual color appearance models available. One caveat: MacEvoy's chart is watercolor only. For a broader pigment database across media, check out https://artistpigments.org. Color Wheel Wednesday drops every week — suggest a wheel in the comments and you might see it featured :) #colortheory #colorwheel #artteacher
