After deciphering Gallus's journal with the help of a wizard named Enthir, the Dragonborn and Kaidan head to the Ragged Flagon in Riften to meet up with Karliah and confront Mercer Frey with what they now know. Brynolf and the rest of the guild members are not happy to see Karliah. After showing them Gallus's journal, they decide to check the vault. Everything is gone! Mercer had been stealing from the guild for years. Brynolf then sends the Dragonborn on a dangerous mission to enter Mercer's house in Riften. She needs to gather any information that she can that may lead to the whereabouts of Mercer. However, before she is able to leave, Brynolf tells the Dragonborn that Mercer had tried to put out a hit on her. He thought he could handle things and didn’t tell her or Kaidan. The Dragonborn is furious with Brynolf for withholding this information not only from her but from Kaidan as well. On their way to Mercer’s house, Kaidan stops the Dragonborn to ask if she’s all right because she seems upset. She tells Kaidan about what Brynolf told her. That Mercer tried to have her killed. Kaidan is enraged with Brynolf for not telling them about any of this. In the meantime they still need to get into Mercer's place and look for information. When they get back to the Thieves Guild, but before the Dragonborn can stop him, Kaidan confronts Brynolf about keeping such important information from them. To his surprise, Brynolf agrees with Kaidan. The Dragonborn then shows Brynolf the plans she found at Mercer's. They then go to speak with Karliah to decide what to do next.
