Hopeville and its larger counterpart, Ashton, were isolated towns established in the late 21st century on the border of California and Nevada, tucked away in the remote badlands west of the Mojave Desert. They were built to serve as both a symbol of the American Dream and one of its greatest protectors. On the surface, the towns embodied the ideal American community. White picket fences, family cookouts, and children playing in the streets, creating the image of a peaceful and prosperous place. But beneath that idyllic setting lay an extensive network of nuclear missile silos, built by the Commonwealth Defence Administration's Ballistic Defence Division. Despite constant patriotic propaganda portraying the settlements as shining examples of American ideals, they were built in a geologically unstable region where minor earthquakes were common. Military officials completely dismissed these concerns, blindly confident in the safety of American engineering. The situation became even worse when the U.S. Army made a deal with the Big MT research company, allowing Hopeville to be used as a testing ground for a secret weather control project. In the process, the people living in the area became unwitting guinea pigs for the experiment, enduring heavy rainstorms, high winds, and severe dust storms.
