What is Alvor like in winter — when the tourists leave, the bars close, and the noise fades? In this video, I walk through Alvor, Algarve in the off-season, exploring what’s left when summer disappears. If you’ve only seen Alvor in July or August, this version might surprise you. Empty streets. Closed restaurants. A town that suddenly feels very different. But is Alvor actually boring in winter… or is this when the real place reveals itself? This is not a highlights reel. It’s a slow, honest walk through Alvor in winter, looking at daily life, location, history, infrastructure, and what it’s really like to spend time here outside peak tourism. 🗺️ Where is Alvor & how easy is it to reach? Alvor is located in the western Algarve, part of the Portimão municipality, and sits just 50 minutes from Faro Airport via the A22 motorway (now toll-free). You can also reach Alvor by train to Portimão or Mexilhoeira Grande, followed by a short Uber, taxi, or bus ride. Despite feeling small, Alvor covers a surprisingly large area and sits close to Penina Golf, Alto Golf, and even a local airfield, which plays a unique role in the town’s character. 🏥 Living in Alvor: practical realities Alvor isn’t just a holiday village. It’s home to 6,300 people and: - One of the Algarve’s oldest private hospitals (HPA Alvor) - Supermarkets including Intermarché and Pingo Doce - Local boutiques and everyday services - The Municipal Market of Alvor, right by the historic castle Fun fact: Alvor’s “castle” may be the only one in Portugal that doubles as a children’s playground. 🏛️ History & hidden details We also note: - Alvor’s historic church - The beautifully preserved Alvor Lifeboat Interpretive Center, once an active rescue station from 1933 to 1983 - The way Alvor quietly blends history, fishing culture, aviation, and modern life — without advertising it ☕ Walking Alvor in winter Starting at the riverside, I walk through Rua Dr. Frederico Ramos Mendes — Alvor’s main restaurant street. In summer, it’s packed. On a winter Monday morning, it’s almost silent.
