In this video, we explore the story of Mexilhoeira Grande — a place that sits just minutes from Portimão, Alvor and Lagos… yet feels like it belongs to a different time entirely. From ancient settlements and Roman villas to Moorish agriculture, this area has always been shaped by the land. But unlike the rest of the Algarve, it never became the centre of anything. Instead, everything here revolved around one place. The church. For generations, the church wasn’t just about religion — it was the social glue of the village. A place where people came together every week. Where news was shared. Where life’s biggest moments — from birth to death — were marked. In a community spread across the countryside, it was the one force that pulled everything back in. Today, the village is still here. The church still stands.
