Why does Tavira still look like this? While much of the Algarve was transformed by tourism and development, Tavira somehow followed a different path. And the surprising reason may be that this beautiful town was actually saved by being left behind. In this video, I explore the story of Tavira — from a time when it was one of the Algarve’s most important trading centres, through earthquakes, the decline of its port and the rise and fall of the tuna industry, to the arrival of modern tourism. We’ll follow the Gilão River through the town, explore the Ria Formosa and Tavira Island, and discover how Tavira’s unusual geography helped shape the place we see today. Because Tavira’s history follows a fascinating pattern: it becomes important, the world changes, Tavira loses that importance... and then it finds a way to reinvent itself. Perhaps that’s precisely why so much of its character survived. But today Tavira is firmly back on the map. More people are discovering it, more people want to live here and development pressure is growing. So there’s a new question: Can Tavira remain Tavira now that everyone has discovered it?
