Lagos is one of the most famous towns in the Algarve, Portugal. Spectacular beaches, dramatic cliffs, surfing, paddleboarding, Ponta da Piedade, a beautiful historic centre, great restaurants, independent cafés, nightlife and an increasingly international community. On paper, it sounds almost perfect. But living in Lagos is very different from spending a week here on holiday. In this video, I explore what everyday life in Lagos, Algarve is really like — from Meia Praia and the Lagos Marina to the historic centre, Praia Dona Ana, Praia do Camilo, Ponta da Piedade and Porto de Mós. We look at the different areas of Lagos and the kind of lifestyle each can offer. And then there's the big question: what happens in August? Lagos can become crowded, busy and noisy during peak summer. Parking gets harder, beaches fill up and parts of the historic centre become a completely different place. But when summer ends, another Lagos appears — quieter beaches, easier walks, surfing, cafés, restaurants and a surprisingly strong year-round social life. We also talk about Lagos property prices and one of the biggest mistakes I think buyers can make: paying a premium simply for having a Lagos address. A beautiful property isn't necessarily going to give you the lifestyle you're imagining. If you're buying property in Lagos, the exact location, noise, traffic, distance from the beach, surrounding holiday accommodation and how you'll actually spend your days can matter far more than the name on the address. So if you're thinking about moving to Portugal, retiring in Portugal, buying property in the Algarve or choosing where to live in the Algarve, this is my attempt to show you Lagos beyond the holiday photographs.
