I've driven through Lagoa more times than I can possibly remember. And that's the problem. Because while thousands of us race along the EN125 towards Carvoeiro, Benagil, Praia da Marinha, Ferragudo and some of the Algarve's most famous coastline, remarkably few of us actually stop to discover Lagoa itself. So this week, I did. And I discovered a town with a surprisingly important story. Lagoa takes its name from a lagoon that disappeared. Its fortunes have been shaped by agriculture, wine, pottery, fishing and tourism. Just down the road, Slide & Splash has been entertaining generations of Algarve families and holidaymakers since 1986. And surrounding this apparently ordinary town are some of the most photographed landscapes in Portugal. Which raises an interesting question: Why does Lagoa itself remain so easy to overlook?
