In this episode of Algarve Unlocked, I head into the hills of central Algarve to discover the tiny village of Benafim — a place of just 435 residents sitting directly above one of the Algarve’s most important water sources: the Querença–Silves Aquifer. 💧 They say Benafim was built here for one reason: water. Yet when you arrive, there’s no river, no lake, not even a trickle in sight. So how did locals survive in a region plagued by drought? The answer lies beneath your feet. From ancient noras (donkey-driven waterwheels) to stone cisterns, fountains, and rainwater channels, Benafim’s story is all about ingenuity, survival, and respect for nature’s most precious resource. 🚗 Getting here: Benafim sits on the N124 road, between Alte, Salir, and Messines, about 20 minutes north of Loulé and 30 minutes from the Algarve’s beaches.
