British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned after nearly two years. The Labour Party leader made the announcement Monday morning outside the front door of his 10 Downing Street residence in London, where he was met with a round of applause even before speaking. Despite Starmer previously vowing to stay in power, pressure has been mounting as an increasing amount of Labour Party colleagues determined that time was up. The 63-year-old, however, acknowledged this in his speech, accepting he may not be “best placed to lead” in the next general election “with good grace.” Monday also marks the day Labour colleague Andy Burnham is set to be sworn in as a lawmaker in the House of Commons after winning a special election last week. Burnham is considered the clear frontrunner to replace Starmer. Nominations for that role start on July 9. Starmer assumed office on July 5, 2024 after winning a landslide election victory. His successor will mark the U.K.’s sixth prime minister in only seven years.
