Of all the bizarre, absurd games I've covered on the channel, Garage: Bad Dream Adventure may be at the very top. • PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/boulderpunch • ONE-TIME DONATIONS: https://ko-fi.com/boulderpunch • DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2AfRXbM2hg Interview with Garage's Composer (@tangomushi) - https://docs.google.com/document/d/1l6B_TtOJHBwYODRighgnl4J71ogQlovSIvDgoW8RLwY/pub Analyzing Themes of Garage (@JankbaronDom) • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y45LZUVT_iE • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R63RCSovTME 00:00 - Prelude 02:58 - Intro to Garage 04:42 - Gameplay of Garage 16:56 - Plot & Major Beats of Garage 34:54 - On Garage Being a Holy Grail of Lost Games 38:57 - In Conclusion of Garage 41:45 - Post-Video Q&A At first, I thought I was going to dive into an oddball point and click title that went into the deep of the unconscious mind. Yes, Garage does go deep on the psychological front. Pulling heavy from the works of Carl Jung, Garage is one of the more thought-provoking, profound and touching games I've played. But it was Garage's gameplay that took me by surprise. On the surface, it has elements of a point and click title. I knew Garage had a fishing minigame going in. Something I thought would be more in the background. But no, this fishing element is more than a minigame. It makes up the core of Garage's gameplay. You have this whole sophisticated economy of buying and selling goods, and resouce management. I wasn't expecting Garage to have me managing resources in a way that evoked the feel of classic Resident Evil, or RTS games, but that is how Garage rolls. It is one of those games that could only come from Japan, and could only come from the 90s, when best practices were still to emerge. It's one of the most fascinating games I've played, bar none. And yet, despite this fascination, Garage is one of the more frustrating games I've played on the channel. Where its resource management can go overboard and grind the game to a halt as you head out for fishing trips to progress. The plot is entrhalling to put together, but Garge loves sending you on fetch quests. Goose chases that take you from one corner of the map, back to the other, and back again. Ones that slow down the game. Without its absurd nature and profound plot, it wouldn't surprise me if I tapped out before I reached Garage's end. But in a way, part of that frustration is part of the charm of Garage. An uncompromising vision by a creator with a clear vision of what he wanted to make. And as fascinating as Garage is, its journey to find an official western release outside of Japan over 2 decades later is just as fascinating. A publisher who pulled out after only 3000 copies released, Garage became one of those rare gaming holy grails. But its devoted audience and facination would catch the eye of its creator, who helped play a part in the game getting a release outside of Japan over two decades later.
