Currently Playing: The Rarest, Priciest PS2 Horror Game | Mystic Nights

Mystic Nights is the rarest, most expensive game on the PlayStation 2. So says several YouTube videos on the matter. • PATREON: https://www.patreon.com/boulderpunch • ONE-TIME DONATIONS: https://ko-fi.com/boulderpunch • DISCORD: https://discord.gg/2AfRXbM2hg OTHER LINKS: • jeremydecola's website on Mystic Nights: https://jeremydecola.github.io/Mystic-Nights-Archive/ • Mystic Nights Translation Patch: https://github.com/jeremydecola/Mystic-Nights-Translation • Mystic Nights Multiplayer Server: https://github.com/jeremydecola/Mystic-Nights-Online @jeremydecola Videos on Mystic Nights • Online multiplayer setup: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HB7vUltXfJM • Online multiplayer gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ulYlHFxyls • Chris's Survival Horror Quest blog post on finding a copy of Mystic Nights at a flea market in Seoul: https://horror.dreamdawn.com/?p=14800178 Timestamps: 00:00 - Prelude 02:49 - Mystic Nights Intro 05:44 - Gameplay & Presentation of Mystic Nights 22:05 - Plot & Major Beats of Mystic Nights 56:58 - The Online Mode of Mystic Nights 59:10 - In Conclusion of Mystic Nights 01:01:45 - Post-Video Q&A Mystic Nights being the rarest, most expensive PS2 game is hard to argue against when you look at prices for the game on Ebay. Mystic Nights was one of the handful of PS2 games developed by South Korean studios. A title that was a commercial failure and never saw a release outside of South Korea. There are few scraps of information about the game itself. There's not even a wikipeida page for Mystic Nights. Googling it, my first search result is on the TV show Mystic Knights - knights with a K. Amongst the esoteric, obscure survival horror games I've covered on the channel, Mystic Nights might be at the top. At least on the availability front beyond emulation, which I used here. While not quite the most out-there title I've played on the channel, Mystic Nights is full of peculiar, oddball design decisions. While it is a survival horror title in its foundation, it has many elements that detour from the norm. The combat can be tedious and its balancing is out of whack for stretches of the game. While a 2005 PS2 release, it looks more like a launch title for the system. The plot of the game can be all over the place in what it's going for. And yet...I couldn't put Mystic Nights down. I had to see what was awaiting for me on the next floor, or the around the next corner. There's some inspired enemy design that pulls heavy from familiar sources, yet makes them their own. There are memorable character with moments that had me intrigued of what would come next. It's full of jank and rough around the edges, but you can see the love and care the developers put into it. Even now, I still have a hard time putting a finger on why I found Mystic Nights so engrossing. It's very much a game where the sum is greater than its parts. No doubt the rarity of such a game plays a role in the intrigue around it. A bit of a forbidden fruit. If you love to delve into the deep treasure trove of survival horror titles, Mystic Nights is quite the find. I wouldn't quite call it a hidden gem, or a must play by any stretch. But it sure is a memorable one, and one worth being aware of. Whether you play it yourself, or enjoy it vicariously through this video. #boulderpunch #survivalhorror #ps2games #survivalgames #mysticnights
