Sir Gideon Ofnir, The All-Knowing, is that exact intelligence made flesh. For a long time, players dismissed him as just another arrogant, cold-hearted politician sitting in the Roundtable Hold. But when you pull back the curtain on his surveillance network built out of severed ears and brutal threats, what emerges is one of the most complex, tragic, and poetically broken characters in all of Elden Ring. Gideon’s story isn't just about a quest for knowledge; it’s a story about a man who systematically erased every scrap of human connection in favor of strategic optimization. In his earlier days, he actually had real friends, including the outspoken Dolores the Sleeping Arrow, who wasn't afraid to call out his worst tendencies. But when Seluvis turned Dolores into a puppet out of sheer deranged spite, something snapped in Gideon. Whether driven by immense guilt or quiet disgust, he severed ties with Seluvis and made a cold, internal decree: no more friends, only assets. From that moment on, people became variables to be deployed and discarded. We see this full cycle play out with his surrogate daughter, Nepheli Loux, whom he positioned like a valuable pawn on a chessboard until her moral crisis over his atrocities made her "malfunction" in his eyes. And let's be clear about the sheer scale of his cruelty: to find the Haligtree Medallion, Gideon deployed depraved Perfumers and Omenkillers to wipe out the Albinauric Village, and then murdered Lobo, Latenna’s Direwolf, effectively immobilizing her and condemning an entire artificial race to eventual extinction just for a piece of information. He used us, the player, as a disposable meat-shield to clear out demigods while he extracted our hard-won intelligence, casually brushing off Ensha's assassination attempt as a minor inconvenience. But the ultimate, beautiful cosmic irony comes at the base of the Erdtree. When Gideon finally gazes into Queen Marika's true will, believing he has unlocked the absolute summit of divine knowledge, he realizes the horrifying truth: Marika intended for the Tarnished to fight endlessly in a broken world. The All-Knowing built an empire of files, ears, and spies, only to find that he wasn't the grand strategist he thought he was, he was just another disposable piece being played on a chessboard by a God who was watching him the entire time.
