Although Lionel never speaks or appears in his original form, his significance, a common sentiment in the community, should not be underestimated. Until the player takes on the role, Lionel was undoubtedly Fia's most trusted ally and confidant in her mission to bring about a new age. This, and I believe many fans would agree, was the entire purpose of his character, to champion a new order where Death is restored, a cause led by the chivalrous knight who was already known across the lands as Lionel the Lionhearted before Fia's arrival. Frankly, there are very few clues about his origins, a point often discussed by players, but his distinctive and, let's be honest, stylish attire tells a story all its own. To me, its design is a clear callback to the infamous Catarina knights from the *Souls* games, with that rounded shape masterfully designed to deflect blows. It's one of the heaviest and most effective armor sets in the game. This, for many lore enthusiasts, is undeniable proof that Lionel was a knight respected throughout the realm for his incredible skill in combat. He also carries a Great Epee, and I see this, much like other fans, as a clear indicator that he was a man of honor, someone who preferred the noble art of the duel over less chivalrous forms of violence. This idea, in my opinion, is driven home by his unique banner, which he wears as a cape. Now, here is a fascinating fan theory I found interesting, put forward by Hawkshaw. the design, featuring three rapierstyle weapons, as mentioned by them has a similarity to the Three Musketeers. He wondered, could there have been two other knights Lionel once fought alongside? Or maybe, as he considered, he was looking at it wrong, and it was a more recent development, one tied to the symbolism of the sun and the eclipse, that protective star. I find that theory intriguing, as it offers a neat explanation for the banner's unusual design. What I do know, based on item descriptions and ingame lore, is that upon meeting Fia, Lionel profoundly “declared himself to be her father,” and in doing so, accepted Fia as his own daughter. I believe that under his protection, a widely accepted interpretation, she was finally safe in the treacherous Lands Between. The message was clear, if anyone had a problem with her, they would have to face him first, Lionel the Lionhearted, solidifying his position, in my eyes, as the very first of Fia’s new champions.
