Tory Bruno is stepping down as President and CEO of United Launch Alliance after nearly twelve years leading the Boeing–Lockheed Martin joint venture. ULA confirmed Bruno’s departure in a brief statement, saying he is leaving to pursue another opportunity. While his next move hasn’t yet been announced, his exit comes at a critical moment for the company as Atlas V nears retirement and Vulcan Centaur becomes ULA’s sole launch vehicle. Former COO John Elbon will serve as Interim CEO, while Mark Peller — previously Senior Vice President of Vulcan Development and Advanced Programs — steps into the COO role. We look back at Tory Bruno’s career, from his decades at Lockheed Martin to his leadership during ULA’s transition away from the Russian RD-180, the retirement of Delta IV Heavy, and the long road to Vulcan. We also examine what this leadership change could mean for ULA as competition from SpaceX and other commercial launch providers continues to intensify.
