In this lecture, I explore the moral and metaphysical realities governing The Lord of the Rings through close readings, mythic and biographical context, and theological traditions. We examine Tolkien’s vision of Nature and the nature of power and consider why those most reluctant to rule are most worthy of leadership, and how the Ring tempts its bearers with isolation and escape. Drawing on Tolkien’s letters, ancient mythologies, and Catholic devotional traditions, we analyze the Elvish hymn to Elbereth and discuss Tolkien’s poetic inheritance from William Morris, Christina Rossetti, and Gerard Manley Hopkins.
