Currently Playing: The Hidden Structure of T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets

The poet and critic T.S. Eliot (1888-1965) is best known for his modernist innovations, particularly the landmark poems The Waste Land (1922) and Four Quartets (published 1936–1942). Eliot’s Four Quartets is a voice distinctly of its moment. Written during the Great Depression, the Second World War, the strengthening of totalitarian regimes, the rise of fascism, and the existential crisis of modernity, the poem draws from the literary context of modernism’s search for new forms of expression, the spiritual crisis of the age and Eliot’s own desire to create a poem that could serve as a “musical composition” for the mind.
