Vlad the Impaler was the Wallachian prince whose name helped create the Dracula legend. From Bram Stoker and the Order of the Dragon to Sultan Mehmed II, Wallachia, and Snagov Monastery, this documentary follows the real man behind Dracula. Bram Stoker gave the world Count Dracula after finding a name in an 1820 travelogue. Four centuries earlier, Vlad III Dracula was fighting to survive in Wallachia, a small state caught between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire. This documentary follows Vlad the Impaler from the Order of the Dragon and his years as an Ottoman hostage with his brother Radu, through civil war, his return to the Wallachian throne, the winter raids of 1461 and 1462, Mehmed II's invasion, and the political trap set by Matthias Corvinus. It also follows the sources that made Vlad famous, including German pamphlets, Russian court writing, diplomatic reports, and later local traditions. Vlad's legacy has never been one simple story. Romanian memory, hostile merchant accounts, and later Dracula folklore all preserve different versions of the same ruler. The final mystery is just as strange: the tomb long linked to Vlad at Snagov Monastery was excavated in 1933, and it did not provide definitive human remains.
