Currently Playing: Caligula: The REAL Story of Rome's Most Dangerous Emperor

Caligula ruled Rome for 1,400 days. He blew through 2.7 billion sestertii, something like $4 billion today. He built a 3 kilometer bridge out of 800 merchant ships. And yeah, he may or may not have tried to make his horse a consul. On January 24th, 41 AD, he took thirty stab wounds in a corridor under the Palatine Palace. The guys who killed him are also the guys who wrote his biography. Only three ancient sources cover his reign. All three hate him. All three were written under regimes that needed him to look insane. So I'm laying out three separate cases here. One says he really was a monster. One says the monster got invented. One says it was a political hit job, built by the men who stabbed him. You decide which one actually holds up. Sources: Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Philo of Alexandria, Josephus, Anthony Barrett (Caligula: The Corruption of Power), Aloys Winterling (Caligula: A Biography) DISCLOSURE: This video uses a synthetic narrator and AI-assisted visuals.
