Everybody knows the Medusa story. Priestess of Athena. Poseidon assaults her in the temple. Athena punishes her instead. Snakes. Stone gaze. Perseus shows up with a mirror shield. I went and looked at the actual sources. The priestess thing is not in the text. The idea that Athena was secretly protecting her is also not in the text. Some of the most important details in the version that's been going around social media for the last decade weren't added by ancient Greeks, weren't added by Romans, weren't added by medieval scholars. They were added by us. Pretty recently. By people reading a story that was already a rewrite and filling in what felt like it should be there. The oldest Greek version gives you a monster with two sisters and no backstory. Homer doesn't even use her name. Ovid gives her the temple scene, but he's writing in Latin in 8 AD, seven hundred years after the Greeks. And even then, he doesn't give you a priestess. I found the actual source for that detail.
