Winston Churchill made four flights into collapsing France during May and June 1940 as the German invasion ripped through the country. Despite Luftwaffe air superiority and RAF losses in the dozens per day, Churchill insisted on meeting French leaders face to face — flying in an unarmed Flamingo transport, shielded only by a fighter escort. His visits to Paris on May 16, 22, and 26 took place as the city slid toward evacuation. By mid-June, Churchill was meeting French leaders in Briare and Tours as they confronted their imminent defeat.
