Cet événement a provoqué une vive émotion, aussi bien en France qu’à l’étranger. Plusieurs grandes fortunes ont immédiatement promis des dons de plusieurs millions d’euros pour financer les travaux de rénovation. Une initiative très largement relayée par les médias. Une partie des Français, notamment les gilets jaunes, a été choquée par la rapidité et la facilité avec laquelle ces sommes ont été réunies. Certains ont commencé à s’interroger sur les véritables intentions de ces grands donateurs... Une nouvelle polémique qui a rapidement mis le feu aux poudres.
