In this episode of The Mid-Century Vault, we are dusting off the incredible story of the Bicentennial Minutes—the miniature time machine that conquered primetime TV and became a massive cultural phenomenon. Envisioned by CBS executives Lewis Freedman and Ethel Winant, this 60-second interstitial defied corporate pushback and skeptical networks to become one of the most prestigious, star-studded projects in television history. Sponsored by Shell Oil (and later, hilariously, Raid bug spray), it featured Hollywood, Literary and Social elite like Charlton Heston, Paul Newman, Lucille Ball, and Gloria Steinem giving somber, dry history lessons right before 9:00 PM every single night.
