It’s a favourite subject of YouTube Shorts, TikToks and Instagram Reels and many ideas have been put forward as to what this rectangular feature actually is – why it’s there and what its function was, some of which are crazier than others. Some say it's a button - a mechanism - a lever that you press and it opens into a secret chamber inside the head. Some say it's a way to attach a beard, others believe it's a blocked robbers tunnel, whilst some say it could be related to a religious practice. So what is it? In this video I take a closer look at a true mystery of the Great Sphinx.
