Just before noon on November 22nd, 1934, on a farm outside of Ashtabula, Ohio, three year old Rita Lent vanished into thin air. Minutes earlier, her mother Olive had seen her playing in the yard outside their home in Richmond Township, guarded by their old police dog, Buddy; but when Olive went outside to call Rita in for lunch, neither the curly haired, gray eyed little girl nor the German Shepherd came in. Olive went outside looking for both her daughter and the dog, calling out her daughter’s name as she made her way around the property, and receiving only silence in return. Deeply concerned, she ran to the nearest neighbor’s house to ask someone to call the police and put together a search party, which quickly grew to include over two hundred men from the surrounding countryside.
