Even well trod and marked routes like the Appalachian Trail can become confusing in less traveled parts, and in some cases people simply leave thinking they can carve a better path by themselves. The vast majority of these individuals are eventually found, though not necessarily alive; but even when someone is found deceased, their location and the state of the remains can typically tell us what happened. Every once in a while, however, someone just vanishes into thin air, such as seven year old Dennis Martin or sixteen year old Trenny Gibson, both of whom disappeared in the Smokies without leaving a single clue as to where they’d gone.
