Everything had been found in the river, and authorities took this to mean that the girls might have gone beyond the intended end of the Pianista Trail - a scenic vista atop the ridge known as the Mirador - and continued down a more rudimentary path carved by the local indigenous community as they traveled between Boquete and the remote settlement of Alto Romero. They might have tried to cross one of the precarious cable bridges which span the Changuinola River as the trail winds its way downstream, fallen in, and been dragged to their deaths through the rocky stream below. It was a neat conclusion, and a plausible one; so much so that the Kremers and Froon families accepted it and considered it the end of the investigation. Many members of the public also accept this official explanation, which has come to be known as the “Lost Theory.” Others, however, are not so sure. From the very beginning, there were questions about the evidence. The very same clues which cemented the official narrative, according to the government, led experts to believe that something wasn’t right here. The physical evidence didn’t seem to line up the conditions which supposedly led to the conclusion that this was an accident. Bones were too bleached, clothes in too good a condition, and fragile items had survived a river which supposedly destroyed human skeletons despite being protected by nothing more than a cheap canvas backpack - and the implications of what was found in that backpack all but prove one thing: the “Lost Theory” cannot be the reality.
