With a population of just over nine thousand as of the 2020 census, the little community forty miles north of Anchorage would be considered relatively sleepy by many of us in the lower forty-eight, and yet it’s home to one of the most bizarre missing persons incidents in recent memory. Back in 1999, a teenager named Michael Palmer disappeared without a trace, leaving behind only a bike and a pair of soaking wet shoes. Nobody could say for certain why, when, or how he vanished, and that would be weird in and of itself given the circumstances, but it was what happened eleven years later that firmly places this story in the bizarre category.
