➤ Subscribe ➤ http://bit.ly/RepairShopYT At the Repair Shop today the team restores a family painting that is fading fast along with a lead and glass terrarium which has been completely demolished in transit. Also under the team's skilful attention are a thermometer which measured extreme temperatures during a family's time in the Arctic. Arriving first are Rokeya and her mother Patricia who've brought with them a painting that has been in the family since Patricia's father had the artwork commissioned in the early 1950s. The painting depicts the family's home in Bermuda, which Patricia's father Edward built for her mother Madree. Edward was a leading figure in Bermudan politics working tirelessly for racial equality and justice eventually becoming Bermuda's first black Premier in 1971. Rokeya and Patricia are calling on the help of art conservator Lucia Scalisi to reinvigorate the painting which has become tired and dull, its once bright and vibrant colours now faded and beginning to peel away from the canvas. One particular detail, a family dog named 'Spot' has nearly disappeared completely from the painting. Lucia has her work cut out to rescue the painting beginning with the dents and bumps in the canvas before tackling the tricky areas where paint has flaked away. Skilfully cleaning the painting before precisely colour matching her new pigments to the existing paint colours of the artwork, Lucia is ready to reveal the finished repair to Rokeya and Patricia. Next to arrive are Nick and Pat from West Yorkshire. The mother and son are hoping that horologist Steve Fletcher can diagnose what's wrong with the thermometer that's been in their family for over 60 years. The thermometer was originally given to Malcolm, Pat's husband, in 1962 when the newlyweds began an exciting new chapter in the Arctic. Malcolm was a newly ordained vicar who had been sent to the Canadian hamlet of Cambridge Bay. A couple of years later the couple became a family with Nick and his brother Phil being born in the Arctic. The thermometer was a part of daily life for Pat in the harsh Arctic conditions where winter temperatures regularly dipped to -35 degrees Fahrenheit whilst Nick fondly remembers the thermometer coming back to the UK and being hung in the garage where it told the daily temperature. Malcolm sadly passed away in 2021 and on a particularly hot day the dial got to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and hasn't moved since. Steve begins by dismantling the unit as he investigates the mystery of what's stopped the thermometer working. With a few component parts to test, Steve zeroes in on the root cause of the malfunction and soon has the thermometer recording warm temperatures again. But it's the extreme cold temperatures that he can't wait to dramatically demonstrate when Nick and Pat return to the barn. The last visitor is Bekki who has an enormous challenge for glass expert Matt Nickels. In a carboard box Bekki has the remains of an antique terrarium that is now a wreck of shattered glass and mangled metal. The terrarium belonged to Bekki's grandparents Derek and Barbara who had it as a focal point in their home and then took it with them when they moved to Spain in the late '90s. Bekki and her cousins have fond memories of visiting her grandparents and seeing the terrarium, pride of place, gleaming and filled with plants. Bekki credits her grandparents with sparking her interest in gardening and was heartbroken when it arrived broken after having it couriered from Spain when her grandparents passed away. One of the most challenging repairs Matt has ever faced, he begins by deconstructing the terrarium and templating the individual panes of glass to see what can be salvaged and what he needs to recreate. The lead structure is too badly damaged to restore so Matt has a mammoth job rebuilding the 3D structure from scratch and delicately soldering each individual lead strut in place. With Brenton assisting to bend the two brass finials back into shape, the terrarium has undergone a momentous transformation ready for Bekki to collect from the barn.
