Abstract: The physics of quantum noise and dissipation becomes even more rich when one considers situations where the noise is either correlated in space, or in time (i.e. non-Markovian noise). Understanding this physics is also crucial to many quantum technologies. In this talk, I’ll discuss my group's on this general topic, focusing on two recent stories that have both fundamental and practical aspects. In the first part of the talk, I will discuss how even in the Markovian limit, spatially correlated dephasing noise can have truly quantum features, in that these correlations can generate entanglement. The underlying physics has surprising connections to quantum continuous measurement theory, time reversal symmetry and non-Hermitian interactions. In the second part of the talk, I’ll discuss a new method for modeling non-Markovian classical noise, where one obtains a purely time-local master equation with time-dependent dephasing rates. Surprisingly, the corresponding rates can be negative. I’ll discuss the physical intuition provided by these equations, and how they are more accurate than more conventional methods. Bio: Aashish Clerk is a theoretical physicist and Professor of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. Clerk’s research focuses on understanding complex phenomena in quantum systems that are both strongly driven and subject to dissipation; it intersects the fields of condensed matter, quantum optics and quantum information. His research has applications to various areas of quantum technology, including sensing, control, communication and computing. He received his BSc from the University of Toronto and a PhD in Physics from Cornell University. Prior to joining the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, Professor Clerk served as Professor of Physics and Tier-1 Canada Research Chair at McGill University. His work has been recognized by several awards, including a 2020 Simons Foundation Investigator in Physics Fellowship, and the 2015 Rutherford Medal in Physics from the Royal Society of Canada. -- The Qiskit Seminar Series is a deep dive into various academic and research topics within the quantum community.
