Sooner or later, you will come across Juniper devices, and may find them to be quite different to what you’re used to. This series will build on the skill that you already have, to get you Juniper ready. It will also prepare you for the JNCIA-Junos exam, if that’s something that interests you. There is an active config and a candidate config. The active config is running right now. When we begin configuring, we edit the candidate config. When we commit, the candidate config is moved to the active config. If there are multiple admins configuring a single device, they will share a candidate file. So, in some cases it may be better to use ‘configure private’. This allows each admin to have their own candidate config, so they won’t overwrite each other. ‘Configure exclusive’ is similar, but it only allows one administrator to configure the device at a time. Configuration archival is a feature that automatically backups the configure to a remote server. This can be done whenever a commit is run, or at a regular interval.
