Introduction to Juniper Networks

Welcome to the Juniper Networks Introduction Series! If you’re like me, you’ve been networking for a while. Sooner or later, you will come across Juniper devices, and may find them to be quite different to what you’re used to. This series will build on the skill that you already have, to get you Juniper ready. It will also prepare you for the JNCIA-Junos exam, if that’s something that interests you. Each video is designed to be as short and to the point as possible. They are arranged into five categories; The Basics, Device Configuration, Architecture, Routing, and Monitoring/Troubleshooting. Each video comes with additional resources, including study notes, links for additional reading, labs, quizzes, and flashcards. #junipernetworks #networkdirection #networking #informationtechnology #junipernetworksintroduction

There are several different Juniper platforms, but fortunately Junos is more or less the same across them all. The M40 was the first Juniper router. It’s quite old now, and isn’t in use anymore. It was replaced by the T-Series, which is also getting quite old. Later came the J-Series as a branch router. These are also ‘end of life’. Their current router platform is the MX series router. The current models are called MX 3D. These support routing and switching. The ACX series router is a hardened switch that’s used outdoors and as a metro router. The PTX is their super-high speed router, used by service providers. The SRX is the current firewall, which also doubles as a branch router. As a firewall, it’s like the Cisco ASA firewall, or Palo Alto firewalls. As a branch router, it’s like the ISR 4000 series. These range from small to large, and also include a virtual vSRX. The EX series switches are aimed at the campus, and are like the Cisco Catalyst switches. These range from low to high end. The QFX switches are data centre switches, and are comparable to Cisco’s Nexus switches. Junos Space is used for centralised management of all their devices. NFX is Juniper’s SDN devices. Contrail is the SDN controller that manages them (like Cisco ACI) Northstar is the SDWAN controller.
